Easy Street Mystery, Part 1!

Be sure to click the Easy Street tab at the top of the blog for "Other" parts if you are looking for the intro and yardage requirements.

It’s TIME!  Finally!

You don’t know how hard it is to sit on my hands when I am so excited to start a mystery!  It’s like remembering when my boys were very little, and watching them so anxious to dig into their presents on Christmas morning ---just HOPING that what they found beneath the ribbons and fancy paper was everything they’d dreamed of – had built Christmas morning up to be.  This is my gift to you ---and I hope you love it as much as I do!

As with previous mysteries this is a limited time release, and will be retired for inclusion in a future book -- so be sure to print each step as it is given. It will be pulled June 1st, and I won't be able to send you parts that you are missing.

As fun as it is to do this ---it also takes a ton of time and preparation months in advance to offer a mystery every year that takes weeks to present.  While I wish I could accommodate those who asked for clues ahead of time because they were going to be out of town for the Thanksgiving Holiday, or those who asked for me to please do it in January instead of November because it worked better for them --- I want you to understand WHY I do this when I do this.

I need to be HOME to do this.  I can’t handle the volume of mail and the detailed posts while on the road – and  this needs to fit my life or it just doesn’t happen. I am home from Thanksgiving to New Years.  I understand that there are those who can’t start until January ---so just print your steps and set them aside, or get a friend to print the clues for you if you don’t want to see them before you start.

For those asking for a side bar badge – just use the Easy Street photo code in the right hand side bar for now. After the reveal we will do an “official” badge, but to do so now would reveal too much!

There are those who asked would I please do the linky on Wednesday instead of the Monday following because they worked weekends and didn’t have time to sew before the Monday post.  My answer is this:  Work on the clues as you can, and if you can’t sew until Wednesday ---post your progress on the NEXT Monday’s linky.  You can post your progress on any step on any linky – you don’t have to post specific to that week, but what I can’t do is change everything to fit everyone else’s schedule, okay?

You must have a blog to link up next Monday on the linky.  More on that to come.  For now, lets get on to PART 1!!

2012mystery 001

My 2 yards of gray GREY!

This grey sat in my stash since *cough* 1990 something.  I always loved it, just never used it – so it became the jumping ON spot for this Mystery!  What are we making with it?

EasyStreet 006
192 4-patches from 2” strips!

4patches1
Cut 2” strips from background and whatever you are using as the grey.  My backgrounds are the black-on-white prints.  I can’t tell you how many strips to cut because scrap lengths vary.  You will need enough strip sets to cut  384 2” twosie  sub-cuts.

EasyStreet 008

Match the twosies together and sew 192 4-patch units.  As you are sewing, pay close attention to how these are feeding through the machine.  I send my pairs through all with the DARK SQUARE leading. This keeps the seam on the bottom going "with" the feed-dogs instead of "against" them so I don't get flipped seams from underneath.  It also helps keep that opposing seam junction nice and tight as I sew over it.

Why be consistent?  So we can pinwheel the seams on the back side all in the SAME DIRECTION instead of having some of them go clockwise, and some go counter clockwise…

EasyStreet 005
Spin those seams like this!

For more info on how to spin those seams…look at the pics on my Florabunda post here:  http://quiltville.blogspot.com/2011/06/floribunda-re-post.html

EasyStreet 007
4-patches will measure 3.5” square and finish at 3” in the quilt.

Because *I* had advance notice of what this quilt would be --- all of my 4 patches became a leader/ender project for a couple of months while I worked on other parts and other things!

Our first linky will start this coming Monday, Nov 26th.  You can add your link to it up until Thursday, Nov 29th at 11:59pm  If you miss adding your progress to that one, just add your post to the link the following  Monday!

Now GO SEW!
PS!  This blog is now PRINTER FRIENDLY!  Every post can be easily printed by clicking the printer friendly button below....look for it...it's a green bubble!  Try it out!

I'll still be doing my own printer-friendly pdfs for the mystery parts -- as I can scale down the pictures so they don't take so much paper and ink to print.  Life is Good!

I bounded out of bed cause Santa Bonnie left the first clue on my computer. Thank you Thank you! Have a great Holiday Season. You sure brighten mine.

  18. I still haven't decided on my colors, argh..... this step is easy enough to catch up on though :-)

  20. Bonnie you mentioned only make half of the units for those who wanted a smaller quilt, but I got to thinking that would be weird size (the same lenght but 1/2 as wide) so to make a baby sized quilt I am only going to make 1/4 of the units. And yes, I understand that at the end if I need to make more I will do what is needed to finish the quilt without any whining or complaining.

  21. Horrayyyyyy! Now I can go to work and let my mind run with the fun I will have when I get home making these 4-patches!! Yea! Everyone have a wonderful day! :)

I have followed all the other mysteries but never participated, so I am eager to start. Of course, now I'm in danger of being put on bed rest (7 weeks to go!), so I may be doing lots of printing and drooling over other quilts. That's okay, though... It'll keep my mind busy!

  56. Hello, Bonnie. My DD has made your mystery quilts before, but this is the first year for me. We decided to use the same grey constant, and then make our own fabric choices from there. It will be extra fun to see how different our quilts look, though we began identically.
Thanks to your mystery quilt we've already shared a great day fabric shopping, and started a new Mother-Daughter blog, where we will be posting our progress.
I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone's fabric choices and final quilts.
Thank you for taking all the time to do this for all of us.

  57. Since I had two fabrics in a grey colorway and a toast colorway (RJR textures) I decided to make BOTH colorways. I just finished pressing and cutting all my conversation prints. Luckily I had an empty container and they are all now happily together instead of only in the neutral drawers/containers.
They are only 4-patches. Easy Peasy!!!

  76. AWK!!! i should never do math in a hurry-I multiplied the number of "twosies" by 2 and cut strips of the grey to make double the amount needed!! Also cut that many scraps of the white/black scraps-may have to make 2 quilts! Can always find someone to pawn the extra one off onto later. So, guess I will go back to cutting the strips into 2" segments to make my "twice as many" four patches!

  80. I am just now printing the instructions. 11:30pm in Minnesota. No time today, as I was shopping with family (I know, but it is a family tradition). Fabrics have been washed for this first step, and my constant has been ironed. Need to iron my whites, but it is late, and I have guests sleeping just above where I would be ironing. Now realize I am not a "noisy" ironer, but just don't want them to wonder what is happening downstairs. Tomorrow I will get the whites ironed and maybe cut. Might not get sewing until Sunday when my guests have headed back to Iowa. But I will get some blocks made before the weekend is over. Good night from Minnesota!

  90. Wowser! What a day-cooked my Thanksgiving dinner, fed the crew and headed back to the sewing machine!! The girls understand my obsession, thank goodness. Got the 4 patches all stitched and will press them sometime when I feel like getting myself warmed up with the iron! Actually did not cut twice as many-going to have to save math for when I am rested, although I am normally quite good at it!! Must be something with getting old, seems the eyes, knees, fingers, and shoulders aren't what they were before I passed 50!

  91. Bonnie, I've condensed your instructions on the WisconsinQuilting.wordpress.com blog to make it quicker to see the fabric requirements and cutting instructions. I've also re-vamped the instructions so that groups of quilters can participate (cutting the work for an individual, but letting more in on the fun). Bonnie, please let me know if this is ok. I make sure I have links back to this blog for your details and reader comments.
Others: let me know if this is helpful. I will continue to follow Bonnies clues with additional group instructions.

  94. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU! I set up my twosies so they fed correctly from the GETGO and they just zipped along. What is BETTER is that I have tried that swirl thingy a million times and never got it to consistently WORK. But THIS TIME I just had to open the 4-patches, set my thumbs on the seams and it WORKED. Yeah...
